If you’ve ever spent far too long trying to work out why an eDiscovery case isn’t behaving as expected, a new Microsoft Purview update could make life considerably easier.
Microsoft is introducing self-service diagnostics for eDiscovery, designed to help administrators identify and resolve some of the common configuration issues that can prevent eDiscovery from working as expected.
So, what’s changing?
The new diagnostic experience will help administrators troubleshoot areas including:
- π Case permissions – identify potential permission-related issues.
- π‘οΈ Security filters – highlight configuration problems that could affect search and discovery.
- βοΈ Policy status and configuration – identify potential issues with relevant policies and their configuration.
Rather than having to manually work through multiple settings and configurations, the new experience will highlight potential problems and provide guided recommendations to help resolve them.
Why does this matter?
As I am sure many of us know, eDiscovery can become complicated very quickly.
When a search doesn’t return the expected results, or a user can’t access the information they need, the underlying cause isn’t always immediately obvious. Is it a permissions issue? A security filter? A policy that hasn’t been configured correctly?
Previously, troubleshooting could involve working through multiple areas of the Microsoft Purview environment before finding the problem.
The introduction of self-service diagnostics brings some of that troubleshooting directly into the product.
That means administrators should be able to identify common issues faster, understand what’s causing them and take appropriate corrective action without immediately resorting to lengthy investigations or support cases.
π Another step towards a more manageable Purview experience
This is perhaps not the most headline-grabbing Microsoft 365 update, but for the people who actually administer eDiscovery, it’s the type of improvement that can make a significant difference.
Microsoft Purview continues to become increasingly capable β but as functionality grows, configuration and troubleshooting can become increasingly complex.
Anything that helps administrators understand “why isn’t this working?” more quickly is therefore a welcome addition.
And there’s an interesting broader trend here: Microsoft is increasingly building guided diagnostics and recommendations directly into its compliance and governance tooling, helping administrators move from simply identifying problems to understanding how to resolve them.
π When is it coming?
Public Preview: October 2026
General Availability: November 2026
Microsoft 365 Roadmap: 565222
π‘ The takeaway
eDiscovery is powerful β but power brings complexity.
Self-service diagnostics won’t remove that complexity, but it should make some of the most common troubleshooting scenarios considerably easier to navigate.
For organisations relying heavily on Microsoft Purview for compliance, investigations and eDiscovery, this is a small but useful improvement worth keeping an eye on.
